Vehicle Weight Reduction

GS Engineering is developing lightweight solutions for vehicle manufacturers in a many market segments. From military vehicles which are performing in the most demanding situations, to off-highway material handling equipment, the need for weight reduction continues to arise as a critical performance requirement.

The GSE team brings a unique combination of talents. GSE has metallurgists with expertise in aluminum, magnesium & process technology; there are mechanical engineers with strong design and analysis talents; and engineers from manufacturing, auto racing, and aerospace markets that are accustomed to stringent, yet cost effective design solutions. The challenge is to reduce system or component weight, at a cost that the market will bear.

GSE has an extensive network of experts, in forging, casting, reverse engineering, and fabrication. Together, we assess the current design and brainstorm ways to reduce weight. The solution will vary depending on situation; the solution could be a more structurally efficient design, a change to a lower density material, or sometimes a change to a higher strength material such as steel to high strength steel.

Examples of successful weight reduction efforts:
- A 30% reduction of weight of a telescoping boom for an off-highway vehicle.

- The conversion of an iron brake drum to an aluminum composite brake drum that reduced the weight by 45%. This drum will save as much as 60 pounds per axle of unsprung weight.

- A 33% reduction of weight for a tracked vehicle road wheel for the Marine Corps.

Bring the GSE team to your team and together we will develop innovative and cost effective solutions to meet or exceed your vehicle weight reduction challenges. Contact us for more information.
