Armor Material Integration
GSE performs small arms ballistic testing for material developers In addition to testing, GSE can integrate a dense ceramic hard face to a backing, and perform comparative testing. The first samples will be compared to competitor panels to develop a baseline, with subsequent panels tested to the same composition to show improvements in the material. GSE is familiar with armor materials including steels (RHA, HH), ballistic grade aluminum, ceramics, metal matrix composites (MMC), SpectraShield, Dyneema, Kevlar, and bonding adhesives.

GSE tests to specifications defined by National Institute of Justice (NIJ) III and IV, and the MIL-STD-662F V50 Ballistic Test for Armor. GSE will test to determine the V50 ballistic limit (BL) with small arms up to 12.7mm ball and armor piercing (AP) threats. The V50 Ballistic Limit is a statistical average penetration velocity in which any velocity lower will produce a partial penetration (pass), and any velocity higher will produce a complete penetration of the witness plate (failure). Based on the BL of each panel composition, a performance comparison can be made to competitive materials and industry standards. GSE has experience in testing 5.56mm; 7.62mm Ball, AP, API; 12.7mm Ball and AP rounds. GSE can coordinate your fragment simulating projectile (FSP) testing needs as well.
GSE is known for quick turn-around and for the ability to adapt to your unique testing needs. Contact GSE today!
